What causes a turkey

neck?

The dreaded turkey neck is one area that we get asked about a lot in clinic, but have you ever wondered what actually causes it or if there are any steps that you can take to help prevent or reduce it?

Here are 5 contributing factors...

  1. As we age, our collagen production slows down resulting in fine lines and wrinkles forming easier. We loose about 1% every year from the age of 25. SCARY! So let's protect and prevent collagen loss as best we can. Which leads on nicely to the next point.

  2. UV radiation is a big culprit, it causes free radicals to be present in the skin which damage our healthy cells meaning they don’t function correctly and damages the cells DNA, leading to premature ageing, loss of elastin and sun induced pigmentation. So get the SPF on every day, come rain or shine because the damaging UVA rays are there even when it isn't sunny, so let's start thinking of our SPF as sun light protection and not just sunshine protection.

  3. Weight gain and weight loss can be a factor. As we age, due to the loss of collagen and elastin present within our skin our skin just doesn’t stretch and shrink as easy as it did in our younger years resulting in laxity. Keeping a healthy diet with less yoyo-ing will help.

  4. Fat distribution in some people and the way we carry it just means there is more under the chin making a turkey neck more apparent.

  5. There is a bone in the neck called the hyoid bone which in some people sits further forward reducing the length of the chin.

There are treatments that we can offer to help tighten the skin, reduce fat deposits, and lift and firm muscles in the lower half of the face to give a natural face lift effect. If this is something that you would like to improve without the need for surgery, book a skin consultation with one of the team.
